Oranges and Other Cirtus Fruits Can Help You Reverse Diabetes

Many type 2 diabetics have higher than normal insulin levels which causes a build up of fat deposits in the liver. This is an extremely serious problem and one which must be addressed if you are to reverse your diabetes and keep it from coming back.

It turns out that sweet citrus fruit like oranges and tangerines can help a lot in eliminating those fats from your liver. This is because of an antioxidant contained in most citrus fruit called nobiletin. Tangerines contain the most nobiletin of all the citirus fruits, more so than oranges in fact, but any sweet tasting citrus fruit like tangelos and satsumas should provide nobiletin in high enough qualities to help. However, sour citrus fruits like lemon and grapefruit do not contain nobiletin. Keep in mind though, lemons are also very beneficial to diabetics in other ways.

We are getting into the season when it gets progressively more difficult to find fresh fruit at the grocery store. In a few months we'll be in the winter season when it's quite difficult to find melons and berries, especially if you try to buy local foods. The fresh figs that should definitely be part of a diabetic diet will be gone too. There will be less varieties of apples available too. However, the one class of fruit that always seems to be in the supermarkets even in the dead of winter are the citrus fruits which should make getting nobiletin easy any time of the year. Please keep in mind I am talking about eating these citrus fruits in moderation, something like a single tangerine a day.

One important point about orange juice and other citrus juice. The nobiletin is found in the membranes of the citrus fruit and in the peel, not in the juice. So, in order to get the nobiletin, you need to eat the fruit, not just drink the juice. Keep in mind too that while most people just throw away the peel, you can slice it and put it in stir fries for a delicious flavor (I really like it with chicken), throw it in salads to add zest (pun intended), and of course you can brew it up as a tea which I'm a big fan of. However, if you are going to use the peel and you are not buying organic (you should!!), be sure to wash the peel extremely well before you eat it.

This is just one food that is especially good for diabetics in helping reverse the ill effects of diabetes and also help cure the disease itself. If you have diabetes, the most important thing you can do in your life is obtaining the right information you need to reversing diabetes using all natural means. You will find the information you need at this link. I highly recommend it and it is basically the same method I used to reverse my diabetes.

Anthocyanin - Why Diabetics Should Eat A lot Of It

About a week ago, I posted a long article about why diabetics should choose blue corn chips over yellow corn chips and white corn chips. In that article, I reported that blue corn has a very powerful antioxidant of the flavonoid variety called anthocyanin (anthocyanidins when they are not coupled to a sugar). I want to discuss anthocyanin in more detail because I think it is something every diabetic should know about. Moreover, I think every diabetic should make sure to include lots of foods that contain high levels of this antioxidant in their diet as often as possible - this is one of the important steps to take to reverse diabetes.

As I reported in the previous article, anthocyanin works to strengthen the walls of small blood vessels in the body, especially the really tiny capillaries like the ones you find in the eyes and lower extremities. What I did not report last week is that gastro anthropologists now believe that human beings used to get FAR more anthocyanin in our diet than we do today. When humans were collecting their food from hunting and gathering food directly from the wild, we were eating much higher quantities of foods that contain anthocyanin. Wild berries are exceptionally high in in this miraculous antioxidant and it is thought we ate a lot of berries and other fruits that contain high quantities of anthocyanin. Probably one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself (and your family) is go out and pick some wild berries and eat until your heart's content (and save some for the winter too).

Besides anthocyanin, there are many other healthy reasons diabetics should consider picking wild berries. In fact, I posted an article about this last July called, "Why All Diabetics Should Go Berry Picking This Weekend." Of course, berry season is upon us again so I suggest you go out and get some of nature's most delicious "medicine" to eat fresh now and also stow away some in zip lock bags to throw into the freezer for later. Plus, have you checked out the prices of organic blackberries lately - almost $5 per pint. Don't get me wrong - I support local organic farmers whenever I can and I totally understand the reasons they have to charge more and I believe it is more than worth it to pay extra for organic, but there's also something very satisfying about gathering an expensive food from the wild for free - and knowing it's even healthier than cultivated organic food! Check with local nature groups, parks, and interpretive centers as you can often find free guided tours showing you how to find wild edible berries this time of year. Your local boy scout leaders are also usually really good sources for information on edible wild foods in your specific area.

Back to anthocyanin... one of the most common complication of diabetes is vessel damage and weakened circulation. It is the high blood sugar that causes this damage. It eats away the lining of the vessels, weakening the the smallest ones faster. Too much of this happening in the eyes can cause blindness, aka retinopathy (damage to the retina). There are also many small vessels in the feet and if they are damaged it is quite easy to get ulcers in the feet. Sometimes when there isn't enough blood circulation in the feet, it can lead to and amputation of the foot and the lower leg (they usually cut the leg just under the knee). This is devastating of course and I really urge all my fellow diabetics to eat plenty of foods that contain anthocyanin.

Okay, so... Which foods contain the most anthocyanin? Basically you are looking for dark blue, deep red, and purple food. Dark "bluish" berries are #1 on the list. Berries like blueberries (and the closely related bilberries found in Europe - YUM by the way), blackberries, etc... Now, edible red berries like raspberries and thimbleberries (excellent one to hunt in the wild because they never sell these in the store) also contain a good amount of anthocyanin. Blueberries are my personal favorite when I purchase them but nothing beats the variety you find out in nature - berries the stores don't even carry. In fact, wild berries even contain more variety of anthocyanin than cultivated berries. Eggplant, cherries (the darker the better), pomegranate, plums, dark grapes, red wine, blue corn, black beans, avocado, sweet potato, purple cabbage, beets, and even purple potatoes (which you can often find at a farmer's market) contain large quantities of anthocyanin. Organic varieties and heirlooms tend to have more anthocyanin.  Even wild tomatoes of long ago had significant quantities of anthocyanin. The dark pigment in black pepper is also due to anthocyanin.

Remember that if you want to reverse diabetes through natural means, you need information that you're not going to get at your doctor's office. While I'm glad you found this article that I've written, this is only one piece of the puzzle and you would benefit greatly from a comprehensive report that would detail all the information you need. From my research, this reverse diabetes report is the best one available. It describes the same natural techniques I have used to reverse my diabetes. I wish you all the best and I hope that you are successful at curing your diabetes like I did.

Why Diabetics Should Choose Blue Corn Chips Over Yellow and White Corn Chips

It's Friday night and we're watching some movies and I'm indulging in one of my favorite "higher carb" treats: blue corn chips and red pepper hummus dip. I wanted to jump online and share with my blog readers why diabetics should always choose blue corn chips over yellow corn chips and white corn chips.

Blue corn chips are much healthier than yellow or white corn chips, especially for type 2 diabetics. This is true for a number of reasons.

First, blue corn chips contain about 20% more protein than their yellow and white counterparts. This means they have less carb and a significantly lower glycemic index. Therefore, blue corn chips do not raise blood sugar as much as other corn chips - eating more protein naturally lowers blood sugar. This of course does not mean you should eat the whole bag but if you are going to indulge in corn chips, choose the blue variety!

Another issue with yellow corn is that such a high percentage of all yellow corn now is genetically modified (between 70% - 90%!!!), and in fact, if you are buying processed foods like chips, then it is closer to 100% genetically modified, aka GMO. However, so far (knock on wood it stays this way) there is no GMO blue corn varieties (really hope they keep it that way). Even if you buy organic yellow corn or organic white corn which by law must not contain GMO foods (in the US), studies have shown that a tiny fraction of these organic crops have now been contaminated with the GMO corn (it mixes in the field - some organic fields that have been tested show as much as 1% GMO!!). Therefore, blue corn is literally the only way to know for sure you are getting zero genetically modified corn. Although we don't have many research studies yet on the effects of GMO, early studies indicate that GMO corn causes insulin resistance and infections. Diabetics should definitely stay away from genetically modified foods (I plan to post more about GMO foods later).

Now, here's the most important reason...

It seems that some people think that blue corn chips are dyed blue but the blue color actually comes from a very healthy antioxidant called anthocyanin (a member of the flavonoid family - and another topic I plan to write more about). Anthocyanin is very well known to strengthen the walls of capillaries and microcapillaries. This makes anthocyanin extremely important to diabetics since high blood sugar damages the tiny blood vessels in the eyes causing retinopathy which can lead to blindness. High blood sugar also damages the smaller vessels in the legs and feet which can lead to very poor circulation and amputation of the extremities. Anthocyanin helps diabetics avoid these particular complications so prevalent in diabetics.

Of course, other foods such as berries like blueberries and blackberries that contain very high levels of anthocyanin are even healthier than blue corn chips, but when you do decide to indulge and eat corn chips, blue corn chips are the healthiest choice. Be sure to get chips that are either baked or cooked in a healthy oil too (remember, canola oil is NOT healthy and in fact is harmful) such as a nut or seed oil. Above all, avoid chips that contain oils that are hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated on the food label because they contain trans fat.

I just can't emphasize enough how important it is for diabetics to have all the information needed to reverse their diabetes laid out for them in a well-organized way - and including the latest scientific research on the subject. Searching around the internet is fine (except there is a lot of incorrect info floating around) and I'm glad you found my blog but I highly recommend you visit this site and watch the video in its entirety. It is the same information that I used to reverse my diabetes and if can see that I have cured my diabetes and my HbA1C tests all come normal now.
